A LETTER TO THE UNHAPPY EMPLOYEE

Dear Unhappy Employee,

I see you slumping down in your faded black office chair with pieces of faux leather flaking away from years of sitting on it, checking out the time clock to realize it’s only 2 pm. You’re scrolling through social media to create a distraction from the hype everyone brought up about college before you thought it through and signed on the dotted line to accept that student loan debt. I notice you gazing out of the window daydreaming of breaking free from your 9-5.

The spirit of freedom is burning a so hot inside of you that every ounce of your inner being would walk out of work if only you did not have bills and revolving debt to pay. You hold your lunch hour break dear to your heart. You go to the park or just sit in your car, and whether you cry, curse, nap, or work on your side hustle, I respect you.

I respect you for moving forward and pressing on. You are a freedom chaser and you are doing what you have to do to get where you want to go.

You and I have met before. In fact, I am you. Going through the same questions, rejections, disoriented, uneasy, confused, doubtful, scared and the tired ebb and flow of this season in your life. Some days you go through the motions as if you are on auto pilot forgetting your keys while in hand. Other days you research online ways to live off the grid to escape from society and all the negativity it has to offer you to help keep you down.

Waking up to an alarm buzz before the sun comes up when all you really want is an hour more next to your loved one wrapped in their arms. It is heartbreaking to accept that strangers get to watch your children grow more than you do. I know you would rather stay home and experience each milestone your child grows into. At work you put up with the co-workers who bully you and disrespect the ground you walk on. You understand the bills have to be paid and right now you understand that so you push harder and harder everyday because deep down you know this season is temporary. When 5 o’clock comes and you drive home with tears in your eyes from thoughts of, “How can I keep going?” But you rise up again the next morning because you know the sacrifices that you take on everyday will eventually lead you right into that life of more freedom.

My friend the unhappy employee who is doing something about your situation, I want you to know that you are my hero. The word difficult doesn’t do it justice when explaining the journey to having more freedom in life entails. The sacrifices you take, the mental energy that you put forth while chasing your dreams. The many days you think of quitting and just following the masses because that may seem easier. This journey you’re on is difficult and can break you down over and over and over but you are fighting a fight that is well worth it.

The fighter that is deep within you, the warrior who is determined, and the champion that never gives up. The unhappy employee chasing their dream of getting out from it all and breaking free from the golden handcuffs your employer keeps you in, your life is too short to live it miserably and you get that. Whether you are 22 or 72 working in a soul sucking job, you see it now and fully comprehend that there is so much more to life. Gaining knowledge while creating momentum, you are doing great! Keep going, keep a grateful attitude, and Never Give Up because at the end of this battle, you would have taken the road less traveled and I promise it is just as sweet as you imagined.

Sincerely

-You Are Not Alone
