Lessons Learned After Being Fired From My 9 To 5

Sitting in my RV gazing out the window on a Thursday afternoon two weeks after I got let go from my 9-5 job. If anyone has recently been let go or fired from your place of employment then I am assuming that is why you stumbled upon this article. I cannot speak for everyone on what they are feeling or thinking,  but I can share with you what is going through my mind and my thought process during this time.

In this blog post I am going to break down a few things I am learning as I grow through this experience. I have hopes that you too will have the opportunity to see this time in your life as a chance to gain knowledge and better understandings of yourself, your life, and what is surrounding  you. So please read on to see that there is hope and light up ahead!

Since two weeks ago when I came into work and got told by the boss that “We need to talk,” I had no clue what was coming. After the initial shock that I was being pushed out of my position, I started to question myself and the type of worker I was. This led me to my first learning experience I got after I left that place of employment….

Learning Lesson 1

YOU CANNOT ALLOW OTHERS TO TELL YOU WHO YOU TRULY ARE!

I walked out of that office for the last time after years with that company and was in tears thinking I was not good enough for that position. When I got told I did not fit the company’s standards, the boss was absolutely correct! I was not fit to be enslaved at that 9-5. I was not a good fit to hand over so many of my precious hours in life only to be tied to a soul sucking job. I was not fit in a place where my opinions and thoughts got tossed aside like a piece of trash. I was not fit to be forced to be someone I was truly was not at heart! My wrists were the wrong size for those golden handcuffs and for that I had to be let go.

My value got questioned that day and it was by the one who knows me best, ME! I forgot who I really was and what I am capable of. I forgot my strengths and how far I have come. To anyone who is going through this transition and not sure where your next step is, please do not forget what you are made of. Do not forget all that you have accomplished. Do not let any boss down play your skills or abilities. Generally it will be a reflection of them telling you those undesirable things that have you shaking your head in disbelief. If you know your strengths then wear them proudly and do not allow others to tell you who you truly are.

Learning Lesson 2

LEARNING TO BREATHE AGAIN!

Anyone ever see a chiropractor for back pain? I mean the kind of back pain that when you take a deep breath you can feel tingling sensations running up your spine and down your arm??? I don’t think I am alone on this one! Sitting behind a desk can wreak some serious havoc on your body. Not just talking about the back but everything from your neck, legs, and your brain health!

Take this break from work and get your body back together!

Being away from the 9-5 these past two weeks has helped me realize just how bad of a toll that job was taking on my body. Since no longer being at that desk for 8 hours a day I am able to move more. Seeing a noticeable difference at the end of the day when I hit the pillow, I am no longer feeling the intense stiffness that I use to take to bed with me every night. Of course this could also have something to do with walking around all day with my shoulders up to my ears worrying if I was being watched to see if I was putting paper in the printer correctly.

**I am happy to report that my deep breaths no longer initiate a mini heart attack scare due to left arm tingles!  🙂

LEARNING LESSON 3

ZOMBIES ARE EVERYWHERE!

Sometimes you do not realize the obstruction that certain habitual things can do to you until you are outside of the situation and able to look inside. It’s all the sudden when this light flickers on in your head and you realize THAT USE TO BE ME!?  This is exactly what happened when I was in the grocery store last week when I saw zombies everywhere!

My eyes were wide opened as I had stopped in the middle of the produce isle. Keep in mind this was around after work time. All the shoppers appeared so lifeless! The expressions on their faces said they had nothing to live for, pushing carts around with what seemed like the only ounce of energy that they barely had left in them! This was surprising to me when I realized that a lot of these people have no time to take care of themselves physically or mentally because they are busy slaving away for hours a day.

Not realizing then the sheer mass of how many people are wasting their precious lives on earth (myself was included) now I can have a better grasp on just how many unhappy people are out there not living their lives to the fullest. Since my ‘Aha moment’ at the grocery store, I now recognize zombies everywhere! Restaurants, parks, malls, etc.  Zombies going about this world and not changing something about the situations they are in for a chance to live their lives more fully!

LEARNING LESSON 4

I CAN SEE A CLEARER PICTURE OF WHERE I AM SUPPOSE TO BE

Without a doubt you know how much of your mental energy gets consumed from a 9-5. Many people are guilty of taking their mental work load home with them even through the weekends. Consistently pondering over work related ideas leaves no room for other important thoughts, such as creative ones! Since I now have no work to be thinking about nor any to take home my mind is clearer than ever!

Not being bogged down with reports due or contract deadlines I now have the ability to use that mental energy and time to explore what really makes me happy. Being let go from your position is a good excuse to take some time to hone in on what you could possibly be happier doing on your next step in life.

I use to daydream about the day I could walk away from the 9 to 5 and have the opportunity to work on my own creative dreams. Journaling, writing blogs, and motivating others to chase their dreams has always been pushed back due to working for an employer. If you have been forced out of your job then take it as a lesson. Learn everything you can from it. Evaluate your time spent there and take a hard long look at what made you love it or despise it. Break everything apart and see how you can benefit.

For some this can be very tough to experience. I recommend you seek professional help if you are feeling unusually depressed from it. Otherwise know that you are not alone and you can come out of this in a better situation than you started if you keep staying persistent and determined!
